Fewer High School Graduates Go Straight to College

By Net Assets posted 14 days ago

(From Inside Higher Ed) New reports from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center show an “unprecedented” decline in college enrollment among high school graduates. Prospects for the graduating Class of 2021 don’t appear much better; preliminary data from the clearinghouse show freshman enrollment declined 2.7% from last fall — 13.1% since 2019 — across all sectors except private nonprofit four-year institutions, which increased 2.5% over last fall. The report also found that the enrollment decline disproportionately affected students from low-income schools, who enrolled at a rate of 49%, compared to 65% of higher-income high school graduates immediately enrolled in college.
