Adaptability Makes Leaders More Effective

By Net Assets posted 01-17-2020 04:26 PM

(From Fast Company) Research shows that adaptability to different contexts is a key trait for effective leaders. Business leaders who can change their approach depending on the shifting demands of a given situation will be much more effective to getting everyone's attention, according to Karen Cates of Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management. For school leaders who seek to increase their emotional adaptability, Cates has the following advice:

  • Increase your mindfulness of the workplace, and remember to acknowledge people's contributions and successes.
  • Keep in mind that your colleagues have individual career goals and aspirations; remembering to ask about these things can make a huge difference.
  • Build your empathy with both individuals and the team by acknowledging how people may feel.
