School Performance Top Priority for 2020 Voters

By Net Assets posted 6 days ago

(From RealClear Education) While Democratic candidates have made college debt a central talking point on the 2020 debating trail, voters say simply preparing students to read and write is their top educational priority, according to a recent RealClear Opinion Research poll. Voters' negative assessment of the K-12 system comes after the 2019 National Assessment of Educational Progress report, which showed that only 34% of eighth graders in the U.S. are at or above proficiency levels for their grade in math and reading. Meanwhile, higher education is nowhere to be found among top education priorities for voters, according to RealClear. The relative silence of leading 2020 presidential candidates on school performance — as compared to, say, student loan debt — indicates there is a priority gap between candidates and voters.
